Collection: Mark Chen Photography

"Mark Chen centers his practice on photography, elaborating it through written and spoken words, collaborating with talents in various areas as he explores the intersection of art and science. He invents and repurposes tools as he pushes media boundaries, devising new processes that facilitate the executions of original concepts. For his latest series Pilgrimage of Light, which explores the mysterious coexistence of the universe, Earth and people, Mark Chen travels to hard-to-reach wilderness to make projections of galactic images on landscapes, altering the latter briefly while he photographs them. The production of this series received a boost from his residency at Grand Canyon National Park in 2023 and 2024. Chen’s 2025 engagements include a feature article Where Space and Time Merge in National Geographic Magazine’s March, 2025 issue ,the artist in residence at Music@Menlo, California, exhibitions in Write Gallery, Texas A and M University, Hong Kong Art Week, and International Art and Science Museum, Texas. Mark Chen has taught at institutions such as University of Houston, Rice University and Houston Center for Photography, and has eight book titles under his belt, the latest title Photography: A 21st Century Practice(Rutledge 2020), is a new photography classroom standard."
