Remember when you had to make dioramas for your book reports in grade school? Well, this is nothing like that!
This handmade diorama necklace of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) features unbelievably exquisite attention to detail. The miniature replica of the telescope, complete with sunshield and secondary mirror support structure, is created by hand-sculpting a scale model out of wax and then using the wax figurine to cast a duplicate in metal. Hand-painted gold leaf is added to make JWST's iconic gold mirror assembly really pop and the final piece is mounted on a base and sealed inside a glass bell jar. A process almost as intensive and complex as the real thing!
Created as part of the James Webb Space Telescope Artist Event in the Fall of 2016. Stern Design Works was one of 22 artists selected nationwide to travel to NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, MD to meet JWST scientists, engineers and other project personnel and see the final mirror assembly in person. This necklace is part of the capsule collection they designed as part of this experience.
Bell jar pendant is approximately 0.75 inches in diameter and 1.25 inches tall. Chain is 25 inches long with a 4 inch extension. Handmade in Brooklyn, USA.
